for INtuition's Bournemouth to Brighton Blast.
After Andy's untimely death this trophy was given to Andy's dad Trevor by Animal and is awarded only when windsurfers make outstanding achievements. This is what Andy was into, competing hard at major events but also making huge impressions on his peers for his go for it attitude, both on and off the water. The trophy has only been awarded twice and not since 2005.
Only when Cribby, Wemmsy and Skyeboy windsurfed into Brighton 107 miles after leaving Bournemouth in a storm gusting 55 knots, in a truly radical performance, was the Andy Funnell trophy most recently and deservedly awarded.
Cribby organised the Bournemouth to Brighton Blast on internet forums as an underground windsurfing freeride event with no entry fees, no support, just a fun windsurfing challenge open to anyone who wanted to see how far they could windsurf.
"Put your phone in a waterproof bag, and join me trying to windsurf from Bournemouth to Brighton on the first windy Day in May. Sail as far as you can then come ashore and phone your mate driving your car along the coast to tell them where to pick you up." The format was literally that simple. Cribby announced the start time and date online (it was not only the first windy day in May but happened to the windiest day of the year) and participants flocked to Bournemouth and Pagham, the two official start venues.
Cribby, Wemmsy and Skyeboy were the only windsurfers to make it all the way to Brighton, after nine hours of struggling with a tremendous storm that left dozens of windsurfers, including seasoned pro's, scattered along the south coast stuck on wind torn beaches.
Guy said "I have won plenty of prizes and titles in my career and they take a lot of hard work, but being awarded one for such an achievement, chosen by such peers, is way more satisfying than any other win. Especially since it has been awarded on behalf of Andy, I'm truly honored.
Andy was an awesome bloke who'd have been with us right to the finish, no matter how tough the conditions were. He'd have been laughing when we were almost crying, so I'm proud to be able to have his trophy at home and to share it with Skyeboy and Wemmsy. I am also pleased to join Trevor, Julian and Whitey to consider others achievements in the future awards of this trophy."
It was only just before Christmas last year that Trevor and the gang decided to make the 2007 trophy award for the Bournemouth to Brighton Blast, and as such Cribby was only able to receive it this month due to his travels.
Andy Funnell was one of Britain's top windsurfers, winner of national titles like the first Indoor Jump, a pioneer of the double forward loop crew and kicking ass on the PWA world tour when he tragically died at 21 years old in June 2004. He will always be remembered and loved by so many friends and family.
